Anyone who has Fibromyalgia will tell you the muscle pain and fatigue are REAL, even though there may be a few physicians who still consider it solely a psychological condition. Other symptoms of those who suffer from Fibromyalgia may include depression, sleep issues and tender muscle points. Pain, lack of sleep, depression-can be a cycle that repeats itself for those who have this condition.
Even though the first diagnosis was in the 1800’s, we are still not any closer to discovering the cause of Fibromyalgia. Some medical professions suspect that it is related to a chemical or hormonal imbalance which can cause the pain signals to become overly sensitive while others suggest that chronic stress may contribute to the symptoms. To date, research is still on-going but the underlying source of this condition is still unknown.
Although there is no single test for fibromyalgia, it is generally diagnosed by ruling out other conditions with similar symptoms. Because of this there is a higher chance of a misdiagnosis due to the fact that the symptoms may be similar to other conditions such as Lyme, Rheumatoid Arthritis or even Sleep Apnea. It’s important to see a physician who has been successful in treating ALL of these conditions, so that they have the skill in identifying the subtle differences in symptoms and allowing for proper treatment options.
Recently new medications have become available to help relieve the symptoms of Fibromyalgia but they may also include unwanted side effects that can introduce additional health concerns especially if used over prolonged periods.
An Ecological Approach
As an integrative medical facility, our approach can involve traditional allopathic medicine and complementary therapies. For example, in some cases it may be in the patient’s best interests to prescribe pharmaceutical prescriptions- if even only for a short time frame to provide immediate relief. In addition, we believe in treating patients using a personal, ecological approach to their care. The goal is to optimize the body functions so that the patient can naturally find relief and be more resilient while dealing with life’s stressors.
This may first include additional testing to determine the current levels to provide us with a “map” to use on the journey towards wellness. The neurotransmitters, hormones and nutrition levels may be checked to uncover any deficiencies that are common with chronic conditions.
Treatment plans are determined based on your lab test results which can include hormone supplementation, nutraceuticals, oxidative therapy, IV Therapy, exercise regimen and mind-body approaches such as mindfulness and self-hypnosis.
A personalized, ecological approach allows the treatment plan to be customized to your needs.
